A Mariña is the local name given to the northern part of the province of Lugo in Galicia. To the north, it borders on the Cantabrian Sea and, to the south, on the mountains of Xistral, Lourenzá and Pousadoiro. To the east, A Mariña is demarcated by the River Eo, which sets the boundary with Asturias, and the River Sor, which separates it from the province of A Coruña.
The largest coastal concellos (towns) are, from east to west, Ribadeo, Barreiros, Foz, Burela, Cervo, Xove, Viveiro and O Vicedo. On the lower fringe lie Trabada, A Pontenova, Riotorto, Lourenzá, Mondoñedo, Alfoz, O Valadouro and Ourol.
It is a privileged land offering something for everyone’s taste: historical heritage with dolmens, castros (Roman and pre-Roman settlement ruins), jewellery and rests of the Celtic settlement culture as well as one of the most spectacular Romanesque constructions in the peninsula. As far as nature is concerned, the most outstanding feature is the untamed Cantabrian Sea, with its powder-fine sandy beaches which wave several blue flags. Landscape enthusiasts will enjoy visiting its capes, light-houses and headlands.
Further inland, we can enjoy the beauty of the forests with their autochthonous species, the courses of the rivers, the hiking trails and the very diverse flora and fauna.
